Ask a mother in, say, Texas, whether she has ever signed up her children to appear in a pornographic film and pay attention to her trigger-hand. It will invariably slip into her purse. Ask her, on the other hand, if she has ever signed up her boy for pee-wee football and she will look at you uncomprehendingly, as if to say, "Does the matter admit a choice?" Nor will it occur to her that the distinction between sports and pornography is, from the vantage point of civilization, a wholly invidious one. Each is a regulated public exhibition of one of our two primal directives : the one, the competition for limited resources; the other, the sine qua non of genetic reproduction. What is the moral distinction between pee-wee football and kiddie porn? Nothing more than the gratuitous use of the word moral.
